The building service contractor (BSC) industry is growing. With this growth comes new regulations and laws that BSCs need to be prepared for. Now is the time to be proactive in planning for future changes.
In this Executive Insights interview, Doug Peterson, general manager of corporate accounts at Spartan, shares advice on how business leaders can create a solutions-driven plan for their company and achieve sustainable results.
What are some trends you see developing in the building service contracting industry?
I see a trend of mergers and acquisitions. The investment world is paying attention to the BSC industry. Investors are providing funding for companies to expand their reach and grow their brand through acquisition. Organic growth is still the foundation for operational short-term gains, but many companies are looking at acquisitions to quickly build their revenue to meet long-term targets.
Additionally, state regulations (including new per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) requirements) are going to drive a lot of future decisions within the industry. Compliance and chemical reformulation may cause supply chain disruptions. It is important to understand upcoming restrictions and develop solutions before restrictive laws take effect.
How would you describe your leadership style?
My leadership style is a collaborative approach with a focus on long-term vision for the team with regard to our goals and sustainability in the marketplace. I like to emphasize open communication amongst my team — from the outside sales force to office administrators and warehouse employees.
One of the things I preach is that if you have an idea, share it. No idea is bad. The only terrible idea is the one you don't you share. This collective leadership style promotes a sense of unity and allows us to make business decisions quickly and cohesively.
What is one challenge you’ve experienced in your career, and how did you handle it?
Challenges are fluid and come when you least expect them to. I do my best to gather the information at hand, break down the possible outcomes and scenarios, provide a quick and decisive response, and move forward. Challenging scenarios are what teach us the most.
Any advice for new BSCs coming into the industry?
It’s important for up-and-coming businesses to make sure everyone understands the vision of their company. The obvious goal is to make money, but how do you get there? You need to make sure everyone is on the same path to get sustainable results that will continue to succeed.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve received in your career?
Some of the best advice I’ve received is, “This too shall pass.” Whether a good time or a lousy time — this too shall pass. Stay focused in the middle of every situation from a mindset standpoint. Always be introspective, and never stop learning.
