How Two Decades With BSCAI Helps Grow a Career in Contract Cleaning
Longtime BSCAI member Matt Streiff is currently senior vice president of sales and marketing at The Budd Group, a family-owned company that has provided services and solutions to facility managers for more than six decades. Over the course of his career, Streiff has held decision-making positions on the contractor and supplier side of the commercial cleaning industry.
Streiff has risen through the ranks with a “never stop learning” attitude and a willingness to put in the necessary time and effort to ready himself for each new level, as he shares in a recent episode of BSCAI’s Contracting Conversations podcast. “You always want to add value,” he says. “You have to think big picture. See what is important to the customer, then go beyond that.”
Strieff also credits his BSCAI membership for playing a role in his success. A member for nearly two decades, he recalls first hearing of BSCAI when he was on staff at a small retail floor contractor. He needed help with bidding and estimating at the time, so he went to one of the association’s events in Chicago, signed up for a bidding and estimating seminar, and then had a great time networking after. “I’ve built a lot of great relationships that [have] led to employment and led to great business. So, I'm a huge fan of BSCAI!” he says in the episode.

Streiff can talk for hours about client service, the economics of the business, talent recruitment, management, and more. But he’s found that one of the most important things that’s helped his career progression is a philosophical note. “You really have to figure out how to know yourself,” he says. “How do you act? How do you react? How do you present yourself in your business relationships? Figuring out what makes you tick is going to give you a more authentic relationship with your customers and your workmates.”
Once Streiff was able to master that skill, he found he was much better at dealing with the diverse array of people he comes in contact with throughout the industry and those on his staff. “With The Budd Group, we do a lot of different services for a lot of different customer types,” Strieff says. “As a result, you have to have a really good onboarding process so people can get up to speed without drowning and everybody can be successful. Sometimes, slow is fast.”
